This is the first biography written about Gandhiji. It was penned during the struggle for the human rights of Indians living in South Africa. The contents of this book were first published in the Indian Chronicle in London in 1909. Rev. J. Joseph Doke maintained a close relationship with Gandhiji in South Africa. While Gandhiji was leading protests against the South African government in 1908, Doke served as the person in charge of the Baptist Church in Johannesburg.
