Why do people buy things on Dhanteras?

People buy new things on Dhanteras because the day is linked to wealth and health, and a new purchase is believed to bring Goddess Lakshmi's blessings into the home.

The name says it all: Dhan means wealth and teras means the 13th day. According to tradition, Lord Dhanvantari, the god of Ayurveda, appeared during the churning of the ocean (Samudra Manthan) on this day, holding a pot of amrit. That is why Dhanteras is also called Dhanvantari Jayanti, and why metal vessels are a popular buy.

The day is also dedicated to Goddess Lakshmi and Lord Kubera, the keeper of wealth. Buying metal, especially gold or silver, is believed to invite prosperity for the year ahead. Whatever you buy is usually placed at the puja in the evening before it is used.

What to Buy on Dhanteras: 12 Auspicious Things

The most common Dhanteras buys are precious metals, metal utensils and simple puja items, so there is something for every budget. Here is what each item means, what it costs and what to check before you Buy.

Gold and Silver

Gold and Silver are the most traditional Dhanteras buys, as both metals are linked to Lakshmi and prosperity.

The most popular Dhanteras Buy. Many families buy one every year, often with a Lakshmi-Ganesh design, and keep it in the puja room or locker.

Brass and Copper Utensils

Brass and copper are the traditional metals for diyas and puja vessels, and they cost far less than gold or silver.

What to Buy if Gold and Silver Are Out of Budget

If gold or silver is out of budget this year, buy a brass diya, a new broom, whole dhaniya or a copper bottle. All four are traditional Dhanteras buys and together cost under ₹1,200. What matters on Dhanteras is starting the festival with something new for the home, not how much you spend.

What Not to Buy on Dhanteras

Traditionally, people avoid buying iron, steel, sharp objects, glass, plastic, black items, and oil or ghee on Dhanteras. Here is what is usually avoided and why.

Avoid on Dhanteras	Traditional belief
Iron and steel	Linked to Shani (Saturn), so not seen as a lucky buy on this day
Sharp objects (knives, scissors)	Believed to bring arguments and bad luck
Glass and glassware	Linked to Rahu and seen as fragile
Black items	Black is seen as inauspicious on festive days
Oil and ghee	Not bought on Dhanteras by tradition; buy them a day earlier
Plastic and leather goods	Not considered pure or auspicious
Empty vessels	A new utensil is filled with water, rice or sweets before it is brought inside
Lending money	Money going out on Dhanteras is believed to take wealth with it

The same thinking applies to gifts: avoid giving knives, black clothes or glass items to anyone on Dhanteras. Beliefs differ from family to family and region to region, so follow what your elders do.

What to Gift on Dhanteras

Good Dhanteras gifts are silver coins, copper bottles, puja thalis, dry-fruit sweets or a useful kitchen appliance for a new home. A silver coin works for close family, sweets and a brass diya make a thoughtful gift for neighbours, and a copper bottle is a practical gift for parents. Wrap gifts in red, yellow or gold paper rather than black, and give them during the day or at the puja.

Smart Dhanteras Shopping Tips

Buy early, check purity and keep your bill. A little planning makes Dhanteras shopping stress-free.

Check purity: Look for 999 or 925 on silver and the BIS hallmark with HUID on gold.
Compare price per gram: Check the day's gold and silver rate before you pay.
Order online early: Place online orders 3–4 days before Dhanteras so they arrive in time.
Shop in the muhurat: If you follow the muhurat, plan your purchase or pick-up within it.
Keep the invoice: You'll need it for warranty claims and when you resell gold or silver.
