Quick answer: A product counts as Made in India when it was manufactured or transformed in a substantial way here, and the listing or label names an Indian manufacturing address. "Indian brand", "Assembled in India" and "Marketed by" mean different things, so check the "Manufactured by" line and the country of origin field before you pay. For Gandhi Jayanti shopping, start with categories where Indian makers lead on quality and price: groceries, personal care, kitchenware, cotton and khadi clothing, and footwear.

Gandhi Jayanti falls on Friday, 2 October 2026, which gives most of us a long weekend and a good reason to look at where our shopping money goes. Gandhi built the swadeshi idea around spinning and buying cloth made close to home. A century later, the same question sits behind every online order: who made this, and where?

What counts as a Made in India product?

Sellers use the phrase in loose ways, and the confusion costs shoppers who want their money to stay with Indian manufacturers. Four common labels mean four different things.

Label on Pack or Listing	What It Tells You	Does It Confirm Indian Manufacture?
Manufactured by	The goods came off an Indian production line.	Yes
Assembled in India	Final assembly happened here; parts may be imported.	In part. Common in electronics.
Marketed by	An Indian firm sells it; another firm may make it anywhere.	No
Indian-owned brand	Ownership sits in India.	Not on its own. Check the factory address.

Rules of origin follow the "substantial transformation" principle: a manufactured item takes the origin of the country where it last underwent a meaningful change, such as turning raw cotton into a finished shirt. Repacking imported goods into an Indian box does not qualify.

The flip side matters too. Plenty of foreign-owned companies run Indian factories that employ Indian workers and buy from Indian suppliers. Commenters on tech forums argue about this often, with some saying the profit still leaves the country and others pointing to the local jobs. Both points hold some truth. If your priority is Indian jobs, a factory address in Pune or Noida does the work. If your priority is Indian ownership and profit, look at the brand owner as well.

How can you check a listing before you buy?

Indian law already requires e-commerce platforms to show the country of origin of products they sell. A newer amendment to the Legal Metrology (Packaged Commodities) Rules, notified in February 2026, goes further: platforms selling imported goods must let you search and sort those listings by country of origin. That makes origin checks faster, but you still need to read the details.

Run through these five checks on any listing:

Find the "Manufactured by" line. Scroll past the description to the seller or product information block. An Indian name with a full Indian address is the signal you want.
Read the country of origin field. On packaged goods, this field is a legal requirement. If it is blank, message the seller or skip the listing.
Look for category marks. Food needs an FSSAI licence number. Many electrical goods, helmets, pressure cookers and toys need a BIS/ISI mark. A missing mark on a regulated item is a red flag regardless of origin.
Compare photos with the pack. Product photos that show a printed back label let you read the manufacturer details before the parcel arrives.
Check the seller profile and reviews. On an open network like ONDC, the same item can come from several sellers. Pick the one with a clear business name and steady ratings.

Why do swadeshi products tie to Gandhi Jayanti?

Swadeshi, meaning "of one's own country", started as a boycott of British goods during the 1905 Bengal partition protests. Gandhi turned it into a daily practice. He asked Indians to spin their own yarn and wear khadi, and he treated the charkha as a tool for village income as much as a political symbol.

That link still shows up in sales figures. The Khadi and Village Industries Commission (KVIC) runs a special discount from 2 October each year: 20% on khadi and 10% on village industries products at its departmental outlets. The flagship Khadi Bhawan in Connaught Place, Delhi, recorded Gandhi Jayanti sales of about ₹1.52 crore in 2023 and crossed ₹2 crore in 2024. KVIC has said around 80% of the about five lakh khadi artisans on its rolls are women.

You do not need to buy khadi to follow the principle. Gandhi's version of swadeshi favoured goods made by your neighbours. A modern reading points to MSMEs, regional brands and craft clusters that struggle to reach buyers outside their own city.

Which vocals for local products are worth buying this Gandhi Jayanti?

Some categories make the Indian-made choice easy because domestic makers already compete on price and quality. Others need more care. Here is a category-by-category view with what to check in each.

Grocery and pantry staples

Spices, pulses, rice, atta, pickles, jaggery, dry fruits and cold-pressed oils come from Indian producers in the vast majority of cases. Regional brands often source from one growing belt, which helps with freshness and traceability. Bengaluru-based Happilo, for example, has built a national following for dry fruits and snacks.

Check: FSSAI number, packing date, and best-before date. For dry fruits, the country of origin matters: some almonds and walnuts sold under Indian brands are imported, so read the origin field and not only the brand name.

Personal care and herbal beauty

India has a deep bench of ayurvedic and herbal brands, from hair oils and ubtan to face washes and sunscreens. Lotus Herbals is one long-running Indian name you will find on ZillyBuy.

Check: the "Manufactured by" address and the ingredient list. "Herbal" on the front of a pack does not guarantee a gentle formula, so patch-test anything new on your skin first.

Home and kitchen

Stainless steel tiffins, kadais, tawas, cast-iron pans, pressure cookers, copper bottles and handwoven cotton towels sit at the heart of Indian manufacturing. Many come from clusters such as Jagadhri for steel utensils and Moradabad for brass and metalware.

Check: the BIS mark on pressure cookers (it is mandatory), the steel grade (304 or "18/8" resists rust better than lower grades), and the weight. A heavier kadai spreads heat with fewer hot spots and lasts longer.

Fashion and footwear

Cotton kurtas, handloom sarees, khadi shirts, Kolhapuri chappals, juttis and leather sandals give you a direct line to Indian weavers and craftspeople. Gandhi Jayanti is the natural moment to buy one khadi piece, even if the rest of your wardrobe stays as it is.

Check: fabric composition (100% cotton versus a poly blend), the Khadi Mark or Handloom Mark for authenticity claims, and size charts. Indian and international brands follow different size charts, so measure a garment you own and compare.

Electronics and appliances

This category needs the most care. Many phones, earbuds and appliances read "Assembled in India" with imported components. That still supports Indian factory jobs, but it is a different thing from a product designed and built here end to end.

Check: the brand owner, the assembly versus manufacture wording, the BIS registration number, and the warranty terms, including where service centres sit.

Are Made in India products more expensive?

Sometimes, yes. Handloom and handcrafted goods cost more because a person spent hours on each piece, and small-batch makers cannot match the per-unit cost of a factory running millions of units. A handwoven cotton saree will cost more than a powerloom polyester one, and the gap reflects real labour.

In mass categories the picture flips. Indian brands lead on price for staples, steel utensils, everyday cotton wear and most personal care, because the supply chain sits close to home and import duties do not apply.

Two practical ways to keep costs down:

Shop festive discounts with a list. KVIC's Gandhi Jayanti rebate and marketplace offers stack well with planned purchases. Impulse buying in a sale wipes out the saving.
Swap one category at a time. Moving your kitchen staples or your hair care to an Indian maker is easy and often cheaper. Start there before tackling pricier categories.

How does NavBharat on ZillyBuy make local shopping easier?

Hunting for Indian makers across a large marketplace takes time, and smaller sellers seldom win the top search spots. ZillyBuy NavBharat groups Indian brands and MSME sellers into one section, so you can browse Made in India products the same way you would any other category.

NavBharat runs on the Open Network for Digital Commerce (ONDC), the Government of India's open framework that lets verified sellers of any size list under shared rules. The section covers ZillyBuy's main categories: Grocery, Appliances, Beauty & Personal Care, Electronics, Fashion, Health & Wellness, and Home & Kitchen. Checkout carries the platform's standard security markers, including ISO 27001 certification and PCI DSS compliance.

One thing to read before you order: return terms vary by seller. Some ONDC listings are non-returnable, and the product page says so. For returnable items, you start the return from "My Account", keep the item in original condition, and the seller arranges pickup. Full details sit in ZillyBuy's return policy.

You do not need to overhaul your shopping to honour the swadeshi idea. Pick one category you buy every month, check the "Manufactured by" line, and move that spend to an Indian maker. Groceries, kitchen steel and cotton basics make the easiest starting points, and NavBharat ZillyBuy puts those sellers in one place for your long-weekend shopping.

FAQs

Q1: Is an Indian brand the same as a Made in India product?

No. An Indian-owned brand can import finished goods and sell them under its name. Check the "Manufactured by" address and the country of origin field to confirm where the product was made.

Q2: Does "Assembled in India" count as Made in India?

In part. Final assembly took place in an Indian factory, which supports local jobs, but key components may be imported. This label appears most often on phones, earbuds and small appliances.

Q3: What is the difference between swadeshi products and vocal for local products?

Swadeshi is the freedom-movement idea of using goods made in your own country, which Gandhi tied to khadi and village industries. Vocal for Local, launched in 2020 under the Atmanirbhar Bharat push, adds a second step: buy Indian and recommend it, so smaller makers gain visibility.

Q4: Are there special Khadi discounts on Gandhi Jayanti?

KVIC has run a special rebate from 2 October in recent years, with 20% off khadi and 10% off on village industries products at its departmental outlets. Confirm this year's terms at your nearest Khadi India store.

Q5: Can I return products bought through ZillyBuy NavBharat?

It depends on the seller. Some ONDC network products are non-returnable, and the listing states this. Returnable items go back through the "My Account" section in original condition.
