Quick answer

Sharad Navratri 2026 begins on Sunday, 11 October and runs to Monday, 19 October, with Dussehra on Tuesday, 20 October. That leaves very little time for Navratri shopping. Don't try to buy nine new outfits. Buy two or three pieces that cover the colours you don't already own, and restyle what's already in your wardrobe for the rest.

This guide is for anyone shopping online in the final days: working women who need office-to-pandal outfits, families dressing kids for garba, and anyone with a budget of roughly ₹2,000 to ₹5,000 for the whole festival. If you want a heavy designer chaniya choli for a ticketed garba event, you would have needed to order it weeks ago, so this guide will mostly help you with the other eight days.

Navratri 2026 dates and the nine colours

The first seven colours follow the weekday each day falls on, which is why the list changes every year. In 2026 the festival opens on a Sunday, so Day 1 is orange, and Days 8 and 9 are purple and peacock green. Ashtami and Navami dates can differ slightly between calendars, and Bengal's Durga Puja immersion falls on 21 October, so check your local panchang if those days matter to you.

Day	Date	Colour	Devi	Easy way to wear it
1	Sun, 11 Oct	Orange	Shailputri	Orange dupatta over a white or cream kurta
2	Mon, 12 Oct	White	Brahmacharini	White cotton kurta set with gold or silver jewellery
3	Tue, 13 Oct	Red	Chandraghanta	A red saree or kurta you probably already own
4	Wed, 14 Oct	Royal blue	Kushmanda	Blue co-ord set or maxi dress
5	Thu, 15 Oct	Yellow	Skandamata	Yellow kurta, or a yellow dupatta on a neutral base
6	Fri, 16 Oct	Green	Katyayani	Green co-ord set or printed maxi
7	Sat, 17 Oct	Grey	Kalaratri	Grey or silver-grey outfit with oxidised jewellery

9	Mon, 19 Oct	Peacock green	Siddhidatri	Teal or peacock green outfit for the last garba night

Order for the second half of the week first

If you're shopping in the last few days before Navratri, remember that the first three colours (orange, white and red) are the ones most Indian wardrobes already have. A white kurta, a red saree or kurta and an orange dupatta handle Days 1 to 3 without a single order. Spend your online budget on Days 4 to 9 instead. Royal blue, grey, purple and peacock green are the colours people usually own least, and orders for those days still have close to a week to arrive. Check the delivery estimate for your pin code on each product page before you pay.

What to look for before you buy a Navratri outfit

Most Navratri outfit regret comes from one of four things: the fabric was too hot, the cut didn't let you move, the embellishment snagged, or the outfit couldn't survive a second wear. Check these before you add anything to the cart.

Fabric that suits October heat and long evenings

Mid-October is still warm across most of India, and a garba ground packed with people is warmer still. Rayon, cotton and cotton blends breathe and dry quickly. Rayon in particular drapes well and holds bright dyes, which is why so many festive co-ord sets use it. The trade-off is that rayon can shrink and lose shape in a hot wash, so wash it in cold water and dry it in the shade. Save georgette, velvet and heavy silk for a single evening event, not a nine-day rotation.

A cut that lets you dance

Garba and dandiya involve wide steps, quick turns and two or three hours on your feet. Before buying, picture taking a full stride and a spin in the outfit. Wide-leg pants, palazzos, flared kurtas and A-line or tiered maxi dresses pass this test. Straight-cut churidars, pencil skirts and bodycon dresses don't. A bodycon dress can work for a Dussehra dinner, not a garba circle.

Embellishment you can live with

Mirror work, gota and heavy embroidery look great under the lights but catch on dupattas, bangles and your dance partner's sleeve. If you're buying one heavy piece, make it the dupatta or jacket, which you can take off. Keep the base outfit printed or lightly embroidered so it stays comfortable and machine-washable.

Outfits that work twice

Nine days is a lot of outfits. A co-ord set earns its place when the top and bottom also work separately: the top over jeans for a weekday puja, and the pants under a plain white kurta on Day 2. Prints matter here too. A purple paisley or a green floral looks festive in the evening and like normal workwear the next morning.

Our Navratri picks by need

These picks come from ZillyBuy's dresses range as listed on 8 October 2026. Most of it is rayon co-ord sets and maxi dresses from Elara, priced roughly ₹730 to ₹1,050 after discount. That's useful to know up front: this range covers the daytime, office and puja side of Navratri well, but it is not where you'll find a heavy chaniya choli. Prices change often during festive sales, so treat the figures below as a guide.

Best for office-to-pandal days

On weekdays, Navratri means a morning at work and an evening at the pandal, with no time to change. A printed co-ord set solves this because it looks finished without jewellery and festive with it. For Day 8, the Elara purple paisley co-ord set (₹1,049) matches the colour exactly, and paisley looks traditional without being formal. Add jhumkas and a bindi after work and it's ready for aarti.

Best for garba nights

For dancing, a flared maxi beats a co-ord because nothing rides up when you spin. The Elara floral rayon evening maxi (₹1,019) is the pick here: full length, light fabric and a busy floral print that hides the wear of a long night. Throw a contrasting bandhani or mirror-work dupatta across one shoulder and pin it so it stays put through the steps.

Best budget option for colour days

If you just need a colour covered, the lower end of the range does the job. The green co-ord set at ₹729 handles Day 6 (green), and the blue and white co-ord set at ₹949 can work for Day 4 with a royal blue dupatta. Check the product photos first, since blue listings range from navy to sky blue. Even together, the two come in under ₹1,700.

Best for Dussehra dinner, not for garba

The green powernet bodycon dress (₹819) is a good party piece for a Dussehra dinner or a family get-together on 20 October. It's on this list mainly as a warning: it's the wrong cut for a garba circle. Browse the full dresses collection with the price filter set under ₹1,100 to see the rest.

Navratri outfit comparison

Outfit type	Typical fabric	Price band (ZillyBuy, Oct 2026)	Garba-friendly?	Best for
Printed co-ord set	Rayon, rayon slub	₹729–₹1,049	Yes, if wide-leg	Office days, pujas, pandal visits
Flared maxi dress	Rayon	₹1,019–₹1,029	Yes	Garba and dandiya nights
Bodycon dress	Powernet	₹819	No	Dussehra dinner, parties
Existing kurta set + new dupatta	Cotton	Cost of a dupatta	Yes	Days 1 to 3, colour fill-ins
Chaniya choli	Cotton, georgette, mirror work	Not in this range	Yes	Ticketed garba events

If you buy only one thing, make it a flared maxi in a colour you're missing. It covers a garba night and a puja morning.

Accessories and Indian handmade products that stretch your wardrobe

Accessories do more of the work during Navratri than most people expect. One good dupatta can turn a white kurta into a Day 1, Day 5 or Day 9 outfit, depending on which colour you drape. That's also where Indian handmade products earn their price: a hand-block-printed or bandhani dupatta, oxidised silver jhumkas or a hand-embroidered potli bag looks different from mass-produced pieces and lasts for years of festivals. If you'd like your festive spend to go to smaller Indian makers, ZillyBuy's NavBharat section groups homegrown brands and local MSME sellers in one place.

Dupattas: Buy one bandhani or leheriya dupatta in a multi-colour pattern. Rajasthani and Gujarati tie-dye often combines red, yellow, green and orange, so a single piece can match four of the nine days.
Jewellery: Oxidised silver suits grey (Day 7), white (Day 2) and every printed co-ord set. Gold-tone pieces flatter red, yellow and purple. Pick a matched necklace-and-earring set, or go for statement earrings if you'd rather keep the neckline bare for dancing.
Footwear: Flat kolhapuris or juttis with a cushioned sole. You'll be on your feet for hours, often on uneven ground.
Bags: A potli or small crossbody bag with a zip. Garba grounds are crowded, and you need both hands free for dandiya sticks.

When buying anything sold as handmade online, look for the craft named in the listing (block print, bandhani, kantha) and the region it comes from. Vague words like "ethnic" or "traditional" alone usually mean machine-made.

Navratri shopping mistakes to avoid

Buying for all nine days at once. You'll end up with outfits you wear once. Count what you already own in each colour first, then buy for the gaps.
Ignoring the size chart. Festive co-ord sets often run slim through the hips. Measure a pair of pants you like and compare it with the listed measurements, not just the S/M/L label.
Washing a new rayon outfit in hot water. It can shrink by a full size. Wash it cold and inside out, and dry it in the shade.
Skipping the return policy. Festive orders arriving on 15 or 16 October leave little room for an exchange before the last nights. Read the return policy before you order and keep the tags on until you've tried everything.
Choosing looks over movement for garba. If you can't take a full stride in it, you won't enjoy wearing it after the first round.
Dressing kids in their exact size. Children's festive wear often runs small, and kids grow fast. One size up in breathable cotton is the safer pick.

FAQs on Navratri Shopping

Q1: When does Navratri start in 2026?

Sharad Navratri 2026 starts on Sunday, 11 October with Ghatasthapana and ends on Monday, 19 October. Dussehra (Vijayadashami) is on Tuesday, 20 October.

Q2: What colour should I wear on Day 1 of Navratri 2026?

Orange. Day 1 falls on a Sunday this year, and Sunday's colour in the popular Navratri colour list is orange.

Q3: Do I have to wear the Navratri colour every day?

No. The colour tradition is popular, especially in Gujarat and Maharashtra, but it isn't a religious requirement. Many people follow it for the evening garba and dress normally the rest of the day.

Q4: What should I wear for garba if I don't own a chaniya choli?

A flared maxi dress or a co-ord set with wide-leg pants, paired with a dupatta and oxidised jewellery. Both let you dance freely and can be worn again after the festival.

Q5: How much should I budget for Navratri shopping?

It depends on how much you already own. If you restyle existing kurtas for three or four days and buy two or three new outfits at around ₹750 to ₹1,050 each, plus a dupatta and earrings, you can cover all nine days for roughly ₹3,000 to ₹4,500.
